YOUR ECONOMIES
Compare each country with the same 50 states.
Why not full-year 2026?
Full-year 2026 observations are not yet available. Comparisons use the same calendar year for countries and all 50 states; forecasts and quarterly annualized figures are not mixed into annual rankings.

THE HEADLINE TEST
“Britain would be the
poorest U.S. state.”
A striking claim. An incomplete question.
TRANSPARENCY, BUILT IN
Good comparisons start with the footnotes.
Official, annual data
U.S. state GDP: BEA SAGDP1 annual tables ↗, revised September 30, 2026. Annual real growth is calculated from 2024 and 2025 real GDP levels. State population: U.S. Census, Vintage 2025 ↗. State GDP per person is 2025 GDP divided by July 1, 2025 population.
One common year
Countries and EU: World Bank WDI ↗, 2025 (source updated October 8, 2026). Indicators: NY.GDP.MKTP.CD, NY.GDP.PCAP.CD, NY.GDP.MKTP.KD.ZG, SP.POP.TOTL and NY.GDP.PCAP.PP.CD. Retrieved October 18, 2026. 2025 is the newest complete common annual year verified for this dataset. Full-year 2026 is not yet observed; forecasts and annualized quarters are excluded. This is a fixed snapshot; rankings update instantly when you change selections. It is not a live economic feed.
Output isn't a paycheck
Nominal GDP uses market exchange rates. GDP per person measures production, not wages, median income, household wealth or quality of life. Exchange rates, commuting and multinationals can distort comparisons—especially Ireland and Luxembourg. Growth is historical real growth, not a forecast.
Purchasing power, carefully
Country PPP per-person figures are shown for context only. They are not ranked against nominal state GDP. A fair state PPP ranking requires a compatible state price adjustment. The UK includes Northern Ireland; Great Britain alone does not. The EU is a bloc, not a country. D.C. and territories are excluded.
Ranks insert one selected economy into 50 states: 1 + the number of states with a strictly greater value. Ties share rank. Extra country selections do not alter the 51-entry benchmark. Source vintages differ and later revisions can move close rankings. Geographic boundaries: U.S. Atlas (Census) and World Atlas (Natural Earth). Europe is cropped to the region; small countries can also be selected using the buttons or country selector. The what-if slider changes one metric independently, without modeling economic relationships.
